I was inspired to do this image after watching the episode of Merlin: The Labyrinth of Gedref which is about a unicorn. For the background I took my own photographs of trees and foliage and created custom Photoshop brushes out them. I relied heavily on the median filter as well. This is a revision of the original image. Thanks to the advise I received from fellow artists here in the forums, I think it came out much better this time.
